Evaluating the Quality and Impact of a Professional Performing Arts Organization’s Education Outreach Initiative
The Context
A performing arts organization offers an education outreach initiative serving elementary and middle schools. The program brings live performance and interactive learning experiences directly into schools, with the goal of expanding students’ exposure to the arts and supporting classroom learning.
While participation was strong and feedback was generally positive, organizational leaders wanted a more careful understanding of how the program was experienced across different schools, how consistently it was implemented, and what students and teachers were actually taking away from it.
Our Approach
WEG works alongside organizational leaders and program staff to clarify what the initiative is intended to accomplish and how quality and impact can be meaningfully examined.
This work may include developing a clear framework connecting program activities to intended outcomes; gathering teacher and student feedback through surveys and interviews; observing selected sessions; and reviewing program materials and educator resources. The goal is to understand both how the program is delivered and how it is experienced.
What Organizations Gain from This Work
Through this process, leaders gain a more grounded understanding of:
How teachers perceive the relevance and quality of the program
How students describe their experience and engagement
Where implementation is consistent and where it varies
What refinements could strengthen clarity, accessibility, and educational value
Rather than relying solely on anecdote, the organization develops a clearer picture of its outreach efforts across contexts.
Typical Deliverables
A comprehensive report integrating survey findings, interview themes, and observational insights
A concise summary for board members and funders
A set of practical recommendations to guide ongoing refinement
Why This Work Matters
Education outreach represents a meaningful commitment of time, resources, and mission. A thoughtful evaluation helps ensure that the work is not only well-intentioned, but responsive to schools, aligned with educational goals, and continuously improving over time.
